Secretary, Alfreda Zaher
Alfreda Domet-Zaher was born in Toronto in 1946. She attended schools in New Toronto and in July 1964 graduated as a Registered Nursing Assistant, now known as PSWs. In September 1964 she enrolled in Lakeshore Business College, and graduated six months later and immediately began five years employment with Anaconda American Brass. During this time, her interests in travel were beginning as she and a friend took a cruise to Bermuda. After returning from this trip, she applied to Air Canada and was immediately hired for a new department, Computer & Systems Services, which was taking Air Canada’s Reservation System from manual to computer. She worked in the typing pool, and eventually became Secretary of Personnel & Administration for the next 15 years. During this time, her desk was beside the window so she watched the construction of the CN Tower.
Alfreda was in Brownies and Girl Guides as a young girl, and when she got into the working world, she became a Brownie and Girl Guide Leader, at the same church where she was Baptised and Married.
In 1969 she met her future husband, Samir Zaher, they married on June 12, 1971, honeymooned in The Holy Land, where she met all his Family. They were blessed with two daughters, Christina and Jeanette and have been doubly blessed with two grandchildren, Leila & Liam. Samir and Alfreda have travelled extensively over the years and have realized many dreams come true….one to take their daughters to Egypt and see the Pyramids – they did in 1992 and the second to take their Grandchildren to the Holy Land to meet their Grandfather’s Family and they did in 2012.
Alfreda retired from Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board in 2007 after 19 years, working half time in Elementary school as Assistant Secretary and full time at Our Lady of Mount Carmel S.S. (where her daughters attended), first as Assistant Guidance/Attendance Secretary and then promoted to Attendance Secretary. She started in 1989 as a volunteer in the elementary school library where her daughters also attended and retired from the half-time position as Library Secretary at John Cabot C.S.S. At this time she got more involved in the community and volunteering.
Alfreda has been volunteering with Breakfast With Santa Foundation for over 13 years. Every year she helps to wrap hundreds of gifts and makes 600 Christmas Crackers for the boys and girls who will attend one of the four ‘A Morning With Santa’ Breakfasts. She is Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Students who become Santa’s Elves, Executive Assistant to Maria Esteves our President and CEO of B.W.S.F. and is on the Board of Director’s as Secretary. Her husband Samir, is Treasurer and together they volunteer and socialize with the wonderful, dedicated people who also have joined the ‘Breakfast With Santa Team’.
